My physical and emotional state in shambles. I realized that my family and friends were my true pillar of support. I desired to be part of the medical community some way, but I wasn't certain how.
I looked into the mentoring of medical students.I am still unsure whether I have the physical strength and endurance that is necessary.
.
One month ago, I was contacted by my father in law from Oregon.
He was just diagnosed with lung cancer.I was the first person he called after returning from that gut wrenching visit from the doctor. I did my best to help him. I offered my emotional support as a close family member as well as the knowledge and wisdom from being a physician for many years.
Two weeks ago, I was contacted by the wife of a good friend of mine from a regional trauma center. Her husband, my friend, sustained a cervical spine fracture from a motorcycle accident. Again, I was the first person to be contacted for my support and advice.
I served as a friend, family member, and yes, as a doctor.
My surgical blade may be resting on a shelf somewhere, but my compassion and commitment to my family and friends as their " family doctor" brings me great satisfaction.
Once a doctor.......
...... always a doctor.
How lucky I am, Indeed.

"Jimbo" (as we know him) is the son-in-law that everyone should have. He is one of the most intelligent yet compassionate people that my husband and I know. We met him in Hawaii over 20 yrs ago when he was a resident and our daughter, Patti, was a nurse at the Queen's Med Ctr. My husband had a dream that Patti would bring home a tall guy who she would eventually marry! Can you believe?
We are both so proud of him ~ he is fantastic and we love him lots.
His mother-in-law.
Jim,
Enjoyed reading your blog. I graduated in 1987 as well (a Riverside program transfer) and went into colon and rectal surgery. I grew up in Rossmoor (my parents still live there) and over the years have been to Mammoth too many times to mention! My brother currently has a condo in Mammoth. I left California for my fellowship and have been in Boston the past 16 years.
All the best.
